What Not To Wear
Pop Out Cake
One Friday in September of 2010 I got an email asking if I could possibly make it down to NYC for the weekend to help out creating a giant cake for Stacy London, one of the stars of TLC's What Not to Wear, to jump out of in order to surprise the show's unsuspecting mark on the S08E29 installment titled 'Aleishe' or 'In Knead of Style'. Of course I jumped at the opportunity! Three of us ended up working on the project: Alex Whatton, Jessica Hurwit, and myself. Alex is a fashion designer, Jess is an industrial designer, and combined with my scenic design specialty we had a perfect trifecta for this project. Upon arrival I discovered that we only had approximately 12 hours to design, purchase, assemble, paint, decorate, disassemble, deliver to set, reassemble, and prim for the cameras. It was no small feat, but the producers of the show were tremendously enthused about our design and immediately threw out the cheaper-than-expected cake they had ordered over the internet.
